The local mayor of Schuld, Helmut Lussi, fought back tears at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Adenau on Sunday.

Schuld in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the hardest areas hit by the floods in Germany.

SOT, Helmut Lussi, Mayor of Schuld (German): "First of all, let me tell you that I am very glad, that in our community there are no dead, injured or missing people. For me that was the biggest concern and on that I can with 100 percent confirm that there's nothing to complain about in this sector."

SOT, Helmut Lussi, Mayor of Schuld (German): "The complete water pipe system in Schuld needs to be thoroughly renewed. Its reparation will take years to be fully done. This flood has or will leave scars on the people of Schuld. And scars that can't be forgotten, that can't be overcome. Our life changed overnight. (Sobbing, audience applauding) Excuse me, the emotions overwhelmed me."
