British MTB protection brand, SixSixOne, have released new Recon elbow and knee pads. These are SixSixOne's most minimalist pads; they're ultra-flexible and lightweight, designed for all day riding comfort. It's the D3O Ghost Pad that delivers protection, with a flexible lattice of intercalated triangles of D3O material moving seamlessly with the rider's knee throughout the pedal stroke.
These CE Certified knee pads hit the mark for casual trail and XC riding, offering reasonable protection from light scrapes and abrasions. The D3O Ghost pad owes it's flexibility to the Impact Print technology, wherein the D3O material is printed directly onto a lightweight lycra fabric, allowing complete freedom of movement.
It's not homogeneously solid, though; you can separate the individual pieces of the pads with your fingers, so I'd shy away from recommending these for use on rough trails littered with loose chunky gravel or pointy rocks. The SixSixOne Recon Pads are certainly more suited to loam, clay or smooth hard-pack surfaces. While the D3O material is soft and flexible to touch, it hardens upon impact, absorbing forces that would otherwise be transmitted to your elbow or patella!
We've enjoyed the excellent breathability of these pads, and the excellent range of movement they permit; you hardly notice you're wearing them. Ideal! I will say, however, that on sweaty rides that last 3 hours+, the seam at the edge of the rear ventilation hole did cause some bothersome friction.
