About 300 more people fled their homes Thursday as lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma, Spain continued to advance towards more communities on the island.
Emergency crews gave those living between the towns of Tazacorte and La Laguna only a few hours to collect their belongings and pets and leave the area.
The volcano has been erupting since Sept. 19, and caused a magnitude 4.5 earthquake, the strongest of the 100 quakes that have hit the eruption zone over the past 24 hours. More than 6,700 people have been evacuated and nearly 1,200 buildings have been destroyed.
