How does VA determine 100 percent permanent and total disability?

Total disability and permanent disability are two separate criteria that the VA considers. A Veteran can be totally disabled, but the disability may be temporary or permanent. The VA will review a Veteran's case to determine if the disability is indeed permanent and if it meets the criteria for a 100 percent permanent and total disability rating.

There are a few things that the VA will take into account when making this determination. One is the nature of the Veteran's disability. If the disability is something that is not likely to improve, then it is more likely to be considered permanent. Another factor is the Veteran's age. Younger Veterans may have more of a challenge obtaining a 100% P&T rating for their service-connected disability.

The bottom line is that the VA will review each case individually to determine if a 100 percent permanent and total disability rating is warranted.
