Evergrande is in hot waters with over $300 billion in liabilities and questions being asked. The 2nd largest real estate developer is now having payments due on it’s debt without cash to fund it. They have over 1,300 projects in over 280 cities across China. Payment is now due for their debts with banks, investors, suppliers and home buyers all asking for their share.
Evergrande is trying to pay back some of it’s debts by calling investors and essentially passing out real estate. Yes, it’s good from them to try doing but that won’t cut it. That real estate they are passing out is not desired and will be bought for pennies on the dollar.
This news is shaking the global markets creating a red sea all over the stock market. The companies shares are falling 80-90% with no end in sight as investors start pulling out. Many compare this to Lehman Brothers and call it “China’s Lehman Brothers moment” however they are two very different scenarios. One is a real estate company and the other is an investment bank.
All this being said, the real estate market is a sensitive one and over leveraging yourself can cause this. Too much liabilities can eventually get to you because the markets aren’t always green.
